Modular Process Skids: BIM Leaders’ Expertise in Delivering Tailored Solutions

Modular Process Skids design involves creating a system from individual modules that combine the technological equipment together with the piping is placed in one prefabricated block that is fully factory ready.
In this review, the BIM Leaders LTD team shares their vision for developing, designing, and implementing Modular Process Skids to provide optimal solutions for even the most complex tasks, making these challenges manageable and efficient.

Modular design is the key to fast, environmentally friendly and efficient infrastructure development in the gas and oil refining and transportation industries, allowing for more efficient use of technology and resources.

Modular process units (more known us as skid) are tested on the plant and can be improved as needed, taking into account the development of new technologies and changes in the market.

Advantages of Block Equipment:

  • Quick installation/dismantling of equipment, with possible subsequent relocation
  • High installation performance
  • Minimum requirements for site preparation
  • Reducing the time it takes to put a facility into operation
Additionally, we have advantages as reducing time and costs for installing equipment in difficult conditions: hardly climatic conditions, remoteness of industrial facilities, availability of qualified personnel.

Key Features of Modular Process Skids:

One of the key features is the repeatability of elements in skids, which allows for standardization of design, production, and assembly processes. These may include standardized metal bases serving as the foundation for skids, with repetitive frame dimensions simplifying transportation and connection.

Similarly, connecting joints, fastenings, and supports, as well as components of automation and electrical systems, follow this principle. The repeatability of these components allows for easy integration into different types of modules and simplifies replacement during repairs or upgrades. This significantly reduces overall costs and manufacturing time.

Modular technologies are becoming the standard, enabling projects to be implemented not only faster and cheaper but also because with minimal environmental impact. Manufacturing modules in controlled conditions allows for precise material calculations, minimizing waste. Additionally, delivering ready-made structures reduces transport costs and CO2 emissions compared to transporting individual components.
Tatyana Gotsulenko, CEO at BIM Leaders LTD: "Modern Modular Process Skids design is impossible without using BIM (Building Information Modeling). BIM facilitates collaboration between engineers, manufacturers, and stakeholders by unifying all disciplines on a single platform. Detailed BIM models help ensure the accuracy of manufacturing and assembly processes, guaranteeing that a module meets strict performance and safety requirements. Visualization demonstrates not only the functionality of individual components, but also how these parts interact within the system."
The application of modular technological units spans various industries: oil and gas (gas distribution systems, platforms), chemical, and pharmaceutical sectors. Below are some well-known projects that use modular construction methods.

Modular Process Skids

Let's consider two examples of Modular Process Skids application - Permian Highway Pipeline (USA) and Petronas Floating LNG (PFLNG 1, Malaysia).

Modular construction methods were used for this 692 km pipeline in Texas, built to transport natural gas from the Permian Basin to the Gulf of Mexico.

Compressor units for maintaining gas pressure were manufactured as standardized modules, accelerating installation.

Gas purification, flow control, and monitoring were handled using standardized skids.

The project was completed within two years (2019–2021), a swift timeline for a project of this scale.

The world’s first floating liquefied natural gas plant, developed by Petronas, uses modular construction for compactness and efficiency.

The plant was divided into skids, including natural gas liquefaction, storage, and waste processing. Each module was built onshore and delivered to the operational site.

Thanks to the modular approach, the plant can be relocated to a different gas field once the current one is depleted.
Production units were assembled onshore, reducing on-site construction time.

The modules are also equipped with heat recovery systems to lower energy consumption.

BIM Leaders LTD About us

The specialists at BIM Leaders LTD have extensive experience in developing, designing, and implementing Modular Process Skids, enabling them to offer optimal solutions for the most complex tasks, making these challenges manageable and efficient.

Understanding the applicability of each module allows our team to modify standard units or develop new ones. We ensure the integration of developed modules into the design of new facilities and the modernization of existing ones.

Modular design is becoming the standard, offering fast, affordable, and environmentally sustainable solutions for complex challenges. This approach adapts to market changes, allowing the addition of new modules and improvement of existing structures.
As Bill Gates once said: “Incomplete understanding of goals is a major problem in any technical project – that’s why success usually comes to those who start small and gradually scale up based on experience.” Source: "Business @ the Speed of Thought" (1999).
These words perfectly describe the principle of modular construction.

Construction begins with small, carefully designed modules that can be tested, improved and then scaled up within the project.
